Midwest Winter Tree and Shrub Care Tips

Midwest Winter Tree and Shrub Care Tips

As fall comes to a close - Many forget about watering.  Although it is not as necessary to water in your perennials before winter; it is prime time to offer extra care to your shrubs, evergreens, and trees.  Be sure to give adequate amount of water to your shrubs (particularly evergreens) and trees all the way until the ground freezes.  Your shrubs and trees (evergreens especially) use this water to protect themselves against the biting cold air and sun of winter.  Many times, evergreens suffer die off (browning) due to drying out under harsh conditions.  Your evergreens transpire throughout the winter where your deciduous shrubs and trees do not. Adequate water helps to eliminate the need to wrap your evergreens in burlap during winter as well.  Evergreens are planted to stand out during the long winter - not to be covered by sacks.  Water-in until frost and your landscape will thank you in the spring!
